I did my first POD Etsy sale! And lost money π«
Hi again!!
It's been a while, but I'm back!
In May last year, I started an Etsy shop with printables. At that time I thought I would only create downloadables. It seemed so easy and convenient! The idea of making the art and now having to worry about the printing and delivery appealed to me immediately.
Something you should probably know is that I struggle with being focused and constant with my personal projects. So after a couple of months, I lost momentum and I stopped uploading things to my shop.
After a visit to Buenos Aires (My hometown), I came back to Australia with a fresh willingness to work on my dreams. Being there reminded me of how much I wanted this shop (and of how I couldn't do it back there). I came back feeling full of energy and ready to start my business once and for all.
I did some research on POD (Print On Demand) and chose Printify as my supplier.
Let me explain a bit about what POD is, in case you don't know.
There are different companies like Gelatto, Printify, and Printfull. All of those have a catalog of products and a number of suppliers that can take your order.
You can link your account to your Etsy or Shopify shop, and when someone buys from you, they will print your design on the selected product and send it to your customer.
Sounds awesome, right? You can forget about making a big investment upfront to produce your designs, and you don't need to hold your stock or go to the post office.
I got into it and designed mugs, water glasses, stickers, phone cases, and much more! I had so much fun, I learned so much and I put most of my free time into it.
With a lot of effort, I made my first sale. It was such an exciting moment! This is the product I sold, a mug with an ink painting of a Greyhound.
I sent the order to production, I paid what Printify told me for the product and the shipping and I waited until Etsy paid me what the customer had. And that's when I realized... I was 10 AUD down. Not a great start, really.

The problem was that Etsy charged less for the shipping than Printify, so I paid the extra cost.
After that, a back-and-forth with Etsy and Printify's customer support started. They would send me what I understood were templates, that didn't help at all, telling me to do things but not really explaining why, like changing the postcode on all my listings.
I am still trying to get an answer. I think that if the accounts are linked and synchronized this shouldn't happen. How am I supposed to know I need to change the postcode for all my listings??
That held me back for a week or more because I had to check all my listings and shipping costs and change them manually.
I'll let you know what answer I get. So far It's been pure nonsense, but I'm hoping for the best.
I am also trying to understand how taxes on different countries work because that was another Issue. I got charged twice.
I' so glad this only happened with a mug! Can you imagine if it was with more than one sale?!
I started this journey because I want to become an entrepreneur, and I need to start somewhere. I need to develop my skills and learn about marketing, and business and I need to commit to something for a long period. I am learning so much, and I have been working on my shop for months, nonstop!
I am proud, even if I am still learning and making mistakes. Even if I am still struggling to make a sale, and even if my products have a huge space for improvement.
Little by little. This is how I learn.
Hope this helps someone out there with a dream like mine!
I'll tell you more about this journey next time!
Cheers! Take care.
